- WinZip is probably the best know name in file compression software and for good reason. They consistently produce an easy to use, yet feature-full product. If you are simply looking to save some space on your hard drive or need to email large files for work, you can’t go wrong with WinZip; however, we would like to see WinZip break out of its safety shell just a little bit and expand their compression options and include a few fancier features in their Standard product.

2. WinRAR 3.93 Professional

- WinRAR is a very popular program among those who need an archive alternative to ZIP. Although we found the file compression program to be a little more difficult to use than competitors WinZip and ALZip, WinRAR is arguably a more powerful program and better suited for power-users. However, once you take a few minutes to get acquainted with the software, you’ll find it’s not as scary as it seems.

5. StuffIt 12 Standard
- Although we found StuffIt very easy to use with regard to creating and extracting archives, the features included in the Standard version are average at best. And it became quite annoying that StuffIt is constantly trying to get you to upgrade to the Deluxe version by displaying unavailable features in the menu.
